Tips for a safe Diwali
The festival of lights,Diwali,brings fun,joy and togetherness. Children and youth look eagerly forward for the arrival of the festival. In fact,they begin bursting of crackers and playing with fireworks well before the festival. Diwali marks the triumph of good over evil and dispels darkness. Unfortunately,improper handling and playing with fireworks,mar the celebrations every year.Every year a number of people across the country,lose their eyesight and sustain burns during the festival. Property is also damaged in mishaps.We suggest a number of do’s and don’ts to prevent loss of eyesight and other mishaps during the ensuing Diwali festival.
Do’s:
- An adult should always supervise the use of fireworks by children.
- Check the area before igniting fireworks to ensure that all inflammable and combustible materials are removed.
- Follow all safety precautions issued with the fireworks.
- Use a candle or an agarbathi to ignite fireworks. They burn without an open flame and provide a greater and safer distance between your hands and the fireworks.
- Open flames from matches and lighters can cause additional fire hazards.
- Keep a fire extinguisher or bucket of water nearby to extinguish any incipient fire.
- Use fireworks only outdoors.
- Wear protective goggles while lighting fireworks to prevent eye injuries.
- Light only one firework at a time.
- Firecrackers,bombs and flowerpots should not be lighted holding them. It is always safer to light them from the side without bending over them.Move away quickly before they burst.
- Hold lighted sparklers away from the body.
- Flying fireworks –rockets,missiles,etc. –should always be lighted in open grounds pointing straight up.
- Discard used fireworks in a bucket of water.
- Wear close-fitting clothes of thick material instead of loose or flowing garments.
- Store fireworks in a cool and dry place.
- Consult an opthalmologist immediately in case of eye injuries.
Don’ts: - Never give fireworks to small children.
- Never ignite fireworks while holding them. Put them down,then ignite them and walk away.
- Do not put fireworks in any container to ignite.
- Never mix anything with the contents of fireworks or make fireworks at home.
- Never ignite aerial fireworks where overhead obstruction (trees,wires,etc.) may interfere with trajectory into open air space.
- Never ignite an aerial firework near an opening to a building.
- Never use fireworks inside a vehicle.
- Never re-light a firework which has not burnt properly. Wait for 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
- Never throw or point fireworks at other people.
- Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
- Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
- Ensure that your children don’t engage in dangerous pranks such as throwing lighted crackers or sparklers at others,or try to make fireworks themselves.

What is World Sight Day 2011 (WSD11)? World Sight Day (WSD) is an international day of awareness,held annually on the second Thursday of October to focus attention on the global issue of avoidable blindness and visual impairment. This year,there is no global theme for World Sight Day 2011 (WSD11),which we hope will allow each participating organisation to use the occasion to highlight its own priority areas,in ways which will resonate with their own target audiences. - About 284 million people are visually impaired worldwide:39 million are blind and 245 have low vision
- About 90% of the world’s visually impaired people live in developing countries
- Globally,uncorrected refractive errors are the main cause of visual impairment but in middle and low-income countries cataracts remain the leading cause
- The number of people visually impaired from infectious diseases has greatly reduced in the last 20 years

 आज दिनांक 4 सितंबर 2011 को अंतरदृष्टि कार्यालय में अंतरदृष्टि फोरम फॉर फ्रेंड्स ऑफ ब्लाइंड की साधारण बैठक हुई. पिछली बैठक में तय किये कार्यो की प्रगति के साथ चर्चा की शुरूआत करते हुए अखिल श्रीवास्तव ने बताया कि कम्प्युटर सीखने आ रहे दृष्टिहीनों के साथ मुख्य रूप से दो प्रकार की समस्याएं आ रही है. 1. अग्रेजी में टाईपिंग के दौरान स्पेलिंग की गलतियॉ और 2. घर से ऑफिस तक आने की दूरी के कारण ज्यादा समय न दे पाना. कम्प्यूटर सीखने आ रही अनीता का कहना है कि और भी बहुत सारे दृष्टिहीन बच्चे हैं जो कम्प्यूटर सीख्ाना चाहते है लेकिन दूरी की वजह से नही सीख पा रहे है. बातचीत के दौरान इस बात पर जोर दिया गया कि यदी दृष्टिहीनों के लिए (मुख्य रूप से लडकियों के लिए) शहर में एक हास्टल की व्यवस्था हो तो उनका बेहतर विकास हो सकता हैं और वह भी आम लोगो की तरह अपना जीवन-यापन कर सकते है. दृष्टिहीनों के लिए वैसे ही रोजगार के अवसर कम है ओर जिस प्रकार से उनका विकास होता है उससे और भी कम हो जाते है. आगरा में बहुत सारे दृष्टिहीन ऐसे भी है जिनको स्वयं से चलने -फिरने में दिक्कत होती है जिस कारण वह किसी न किसी के उपर आश्रित होते है और स्वयं से कुछ करने में अक्षम होते है. चर्चा के दौरान इन सारी समस्याओं के समाधान हेतु विचार विमर्श हुआ और यह तय किया गया कि एक नयी रणनीति बनाई जाये ताकि इस तरह की समस्याओं से निपटा जा सके. फोरम की अगली बैठक 6 नंवबर 2011 को प्रातः 10 बजे से अंतरदृष्टि कार्यालय पर होगी यह भी तय किया गया. चर्चा में मुख्य रूप से सरनाम,सिप्पी,निधि,अनीता,अवंतिका,ब्रजेश आदि ने भाग लिया

आगरा। आज दिनांक 5 दिसंबर 2010 को अंतरदृष्टि कार्यालय पर अन्तरदृष्टि फोरम फॉर फ्रेंण्डस ऑफ ब्लाइंड (ए.एफ.एफ.बी.) के तत्वाधान में विश्व विकलांग दिवस के अवसर पर एक बैठक का आयोजन किया गया। विकलांगों,मुख्य रूप से दृष्टिहीनों की सामाजिक स्थिति में सुधार के उपायों के बारे में हुई चर्चा में प्रमुख रूप से एक रिसोर्स सेंटर बनाये जाने की आवश्यकता निकल कर सामने आई। एक ऐसा रिसोर्स सेंटर जिसमें दृष्टिहीनों के विकास हेतु हर संभ्ाव संसाधनों की उपलब्धता हों। ब्रेल,कम्प्यूटर,अग्रेंजी,व्यक्तिव विकास की कक्षाओं के अलावा दैनिक जरूरत की वस्तएं जैसे सफेद छड़ी,टांकिंग बुक्स,सी.डी.,घड़ी,ब्रेल स्लेट,ब्रेलर,ब्रेल में किताबे आदि भी उपलब्ध हो। विगत वर्षो के अपने अनुभवों के आधार पर चर्चा के दौरान ही सदस्यों ने इस बात पर सहमति बनाई की शुरूआत में प्रत्येक रविवार को ब्रेल,कम्प्यूटर,अग्रेंजी,व्यक्तिव विकास की कक्षाओं को प्रातः 11 बजे से शाम 4 बचे तक चलाया जाये। सदस्यों ने इस बात पर सहमति व्यक्त कि कोशिश यह की जानी चाहिए कि सेंटर अपने दम पर ही शुरू हो और चले। रिसोर्स सेंटर के लिए संसाधनों को एकत्र करने का काम सदस्यों द्वारा ही किये जाने पर सहमति बनी और सदस्यों ने आपास में जिम्मेदारी बांटते हुए यह तय किया कि अगले रविवार तक काफी सामग्री एकत्र कर ली जायेगी। एन.आई.वी.एच. देहरादून को इस आश्य का एक पत्र लिख इसका श्रीगणेश भी कर दिया गया। इन कक्षाओं का लाभ किसी भी उम्र के दृष्टिहीन ले सकते है और यदि अन्य लोग भी ब्रेल सीखने के इच्छुक है तो उनका भी स्वागत होगा। चर्चा के दौरान ही हरनाम ने यह प्रश्न उठाया कि बहुत सारे दृष्टिहीन जो दूर रहते है उनकों कैसे रिसोर्स सेंटर का लाभ मिलेगा,उनको भी इससे जोड़ने की व्यवस्था की जानी चाहिएं। डा. अमर प्रकाश ने इस समस्या का समाधान सुझाते हुए कहां कि यदि दृष्टिहीन आने जाने का खर्चा वहन करे तो उनके लिए वाहन की व्यवस्था का इंतजाम किया जा सकता है। इसके पहले सदस्यों के स्वागत के साथ कार्यक्रम की शुरूआत करते हुए श्रीधर उपाध्याय ने पिछले दिनों हुई फोरम की बैठकों पर संक्षिप्त प्रकाश डाला। इस अवसर पर शिवानी ने ”विश्वास”नामक एक लेख पढ़ा जिसमें यह बताया गया कि विश्वास हो तो मनुष्य किसी भी कठिनाई से मुकाबला कर सकता है,जहां विश्वास है वहा जीवन के सभी अभाव दूर हो जाते है। डा. पुष्पा श्रीवास्तव ने दृष्टिहीनों की वर्तमान स्थिति पर प्रकाश डालते हुए कहां कि विकलांग दिवस रोज मनाएं जाने की जरूरत है,आज भी हमारे समाज दृष्टिहीनों,विकलांगों को समाज से दूर रखा जाता है,घर वाले उनकी उपस्थित समाज में दर्ज नहीं कराते,समाज से छिपाते है। ऐसे अभिभावकों को इस बात के लिए प्रेरित करने की जरूरत कि उनके बच्चें किसी भी प्रकार से सामान्य बच्चों से कम नहीं है। घर में छुपा कर रखने के बजाय उनकों समाज का हिस्सा बनाये ताकि वह भी सामान्य लोगो जैसे जीवन-यापन कर सकें। चर्चा को आगे बढ़ाते हुए रघुनाथ ने कहां कि यदि हम लोग अपनी खबरों और जरूरत की अन्य सामग्री को ब्रेल में लिख सके तो काफी सारे दृष्टिहीनों को फायदा पहुंच सकता है। चर्चा में मुख्य रूप से श्रीधर उपाध्याय,अमर प्रकाश,सरनाम,हरपाल,शिवानी,पुष्पा श्रीवास्तव,रघुनाथ,अजय,मनोहर लाल गिदवानी,अजहर उमरी,नन्दू,मंजू उपाध्याय,सारिका,आदि नें अपनी बात रखी। तीन घंटे चली चर्चा में ए.एफ.एफ.बी. से ज्यादा से ज्यादा दृष्टिहीनों और सामान्य जन को जोड़ने पर भी विचार-विमर्श हुआ तथा ए.एफ.एफ.बी. की अगली बैठक की तारीख 6 फरवरी तय की गई।
जी हॉं मै भी पढ़ सकती हूँ ”जी हॉं मै भी पढ़ सकती हूँ लोगों की भावनाओं को,उनके अनुभवों को,उनकी सफलताओं को,समाचार को और भी बहुत कुछ। मुझे भी लिखना आता है अपने विचारो को,अपनी भावनाओं को,मै भी लिख कर अपनी भावनाओं,विचारों को सभी लोगों के साथ बांट सकती हूँ और अपना योगदान दे सकती हूँ संसार को आगे बढ़ाने में,समाज को बेहतर बनाने में। आप सोच रहे होंगे कि इसमें कौन सी ऐसी नयी बात है जिसके लिए मैं उत्साहित हूँ –एक पढ़े-लिखे व्यक्ति से सब लोग इसी तरह की उम्मीद रखते है। लेकिन नहीं यहां पर एक बडा अंतर है –मैं दृष्टिहीन पैदा हुई थी। आज मै अगर ये सब कर पा रही हूँ तो सिर्फ इस लिए क्योंकि मैंने ब्रेल सीखी है। ब्रेल सिस्टम एक तरह की लिपि है,जिसको दुनिया भर में नेत्रहीनों को पढ़ने और लिखने में छूकर व्यवहार में लाया जाता है। इसमें प्रत्येक आयताकार सेल में 6 डॉट्स होते हैं,जो थोड़े-थोड़े उभरे होते हैं। यह दो पंक्तियों में बनी होती हैं। इस आकार में अलग-अलग 64 अक्षरों को बनाया जा सकता है। सेल की बांई पंक्ति में उपर से नीचे 1,2,3 बने होते हैं। इसी तरह दांईं ओर 4,5,6 बनी होती हैं। एक डॉट की औसतन ऊंचाई 0.02 इंच होती है। यदि देखा जाये तो ब्रेल दृष्टिहीनों के जीवन में एक महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका अदा करने के साथ-साथ उनमें कौशल तथा कुछ कर गुजरने की तमन्ना का मूल आधार बना हुआ है। जिन दृष्टिहीनों को ब्रेल अच्छी तरह से आती है उनकों जीवन के हर क्षेत्र में मदद मिलती है चाहे वो नौकरी कर रहे हो या पढ़ाई या फिर संगीत। ब्रेल आधारित बहुत सारे छोटे-छोटे उपकरण भी उपलब्ध है जिनका इस्तेमाल कही भी किया जा सकता है। चाहे वो नोट्स लेने में ही क्यो न हो। वास्तव में दृष्टिहीनों के जीवन में ब्रेल एक अहम स्थान रखती है। यह न सिर्फ उन्हें शिक्षित बनाती है बल्कि उन्हें आजादी का,बराबरी का भी एहसास कराती है। ब्रेल कुंजी है रोजगार की,आजादी की,और सफलता की। यह बहुत जरूरी है कि प्रत्येक ऐसे बच्चे को जो कि दृष्टिहीन है ब्रेल सिखाया जाय। अंतरदृष्टि दृष्टिहीन बच्चों मुख्य रूप से लड़कियों के लिए ब्रेल,कम्प्यूटर,अंग्रेजी एवं व्यक्तित्व विकास की कक्षाओं की शुरूआत अंतरदृष्टि कार्यालय –113,टैगोर नगर,दयाल बाग,आगरा में 5 दिसंबर से प्रत्येक रविवार को करने जा रहा है। यदि आप किसी दृष्टिहीन को जानते है या दृष्टिहीनों की मदद करना चाहते है तो यह जानकारी उस तक पहुंचाने का कष्ट करें। अधिक जानकारी के लिए 9412258575,9358396846 पर संपर्क करें। ब्रेल,कम्प्यूटर,अंग्रेजी एवं व्यक्तित्व विकास की कक्षाएं

Led by Vision 2020,this year’s annual event marks the midway point in the ‘Countdown to 2020’ and the World Health Organisation’s objective to eliminate avoidable blindness by 2020. World Sight Day 2010 reveals successes of the last 10 years and challenges for the next 10 years in tackling global blindness - 10% decrease in worldwide blindness and visual impairment
- Chronic conditions to take over infectious eye diseases as primary cause of blindness
- Impact to be felt in developed as well as developing countries
According to new preliminary data released by the World Health Organization (WHO),worldwide,285.3 million people are visually impaired. In the past 10 years,VISION 2020:The Right to Sight (a joint global initiative of the International Agency for the Prevention for Blindness (IAPB) and WHO) has contributed to a 10% reduction in the number of visually impaired people worldwide,which was announced at a meeting hosted by the WHO in Geneva earlier this week,as part of World Sight Day activities. All the more impressive is that this is set against a growing global population and an 18% increase in the world’s population aged over 50,the population most vulnerable to visual impairment. The number of blind people has decreased by 5.2 million (from 45 million in 2004 to 39.8 million in the present day),representing a decline of 13% in the last six years. - While the new figures represent a significant achievement,challenges remain if VISION 2020 is to achieve its goal of eliminating the main causes of avoidable blindness by the year 2020. Among these are that nearly half of the cases of visual impairment are due to uncorrected refractive errors (such as nearsightedness),in most of which cases normal vision could be restored with eye glasses. While blinding infectious diseases such as trachoma (a persistent,contagious form of conjunctivitis) and onchocerciasis (river blindness) are on target for global eradication by 2020
- Chronic causes of blindness,such as cataract,age related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy are growing in prevalence worldwide,even in the developed world. This highlights the modern trend whereby infectious diseases are decreasing as a result of public health interventions,while chronic diseases,which affect both the developed and the developing world are on the rise.
These new data and the changing dynamic they represent have been announced by VISION 2020 as part of World Sight Day 2010,the international day of awareness to focus attention on the global issue of avoidable blindness and visual impairment. A number of events are planned across the globe,including an IAPB-hosted event at the CERN Globe of Science and Innovation in Geneva.
Bruce Spivey,MD,International Council of Ophthalmology President,today commented on current blindness trends saying,“The greatest challenges facing VISION 2020 and its supporters in the next 10 years are chronic conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration,which are increasing not only in developing countries,but all over the world,with further rapid increase expected as populations age and lifestyles change.”
This year marks the midpoint of the VISION 2020 commitment to eliminate the main causes of avoidable blindness by 2020. In the past 10 years,thanks to VISION 2020 efforts,all WHO member states have made formal commitments to investing in eye care,two World Health Assembly resolutions have urged all WHO member states to develop and implement VISION 2020 national plans and more than 100 countries have drafted national eye care plans.
Although several programmes have been implemented to tackle chronic causes of blindness,further awareness,resources and preventative measures are still needed in both developed and developing countries across the globe. This will be one of the main priorities for VISION 2020 over the next 10 years,requiring the united efforts of NGOs,development agencies and eye care professionals worldwide.

The goal is to eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020. In the long term,the initiative seeks to ensure the best possible vision for all people,thereby improving their quality of life. This goal should be achieved through the establishment of a sustainable,comprehensive eye-care system as an integral part of every national health system.

At least 400 people including students from 5 schools in Agra and more than 12000 people from different parts of India through internet participated in a fortnight-long eye donation awareness camp organized by Antardrishti along with the eye bank,S N Medical College,Agra. Students wrote slogans and made posters,after participation in the eye donation workshop,to spread awareness about the cause. “We wanted to sensitise students and people towards the need for eye donation by conducting this awareness camp,” said Dr. Amar Prakash,one of the volunteer for this fortnight camp.
Prof D.J. Pandey,in-charge of the eye bank at SNMC says,“Eye donations in the city have witnessed manifold increase over the years,but it is still less than the required number. It is the changing mindset that has brought in the transition,but the myth associated with eye donation has not been completely wiped out.”
Mr. M. L. Gidwani,city based banker and cartoonist says,“There is a urgent need to change people’s mindset. The number of people who pledge their eyes for donation is high. However,not all donations come in as at times the relatives are not comfortable with the idea.” To promote eye donation and fighting out superstitions and mistaken notions about the eye donation,he developed a cartoon based concept,along with Antardrishti. He is working on the basics and hopeful also that very soon it will be available for everyone to use it and will promote eye donation.
